Job interviews can be stressful especially if you haven’t had much experience. A job interview gives you a chance to make a good impression on the hiring team by showing your qualifications and your performance during this important meeting.
Here are some tips that can help you mark well in the meeting –
1. Do some research about the company in advance- Try to figure out the goals of the company or the organisation that you’re applying for a job with, because if you come to the interview with some background knowledge about the company, you’ll make an impression as a deserving candidate.
2. Dress the part- Interview clothes should always look professional because it makes a strong first impression. Make sure you wear an outfit that is simple and neat. Avoid ripped jeans, hoodies, sneakers and see-through clothes. Don’t forget to shine your shoes.
3. Be punctual- Aim to arrive 10 or 15 minutes before your assigned time. Give yourself a few extra minutes to visit the restroom, check your outfit and relax your mind. Stay busy as you wait, reviewing the job description or writing notes. When interviewer comes out to greet you, keep your documents in your left hand so you are prepared to get up and shake hands.
4. Be confident- The way you present yourself is very important. Be confident and if you’re not, try to fake it! Smile and make eye contact. Try to talk at the normal speed and don’t interrupt the interviewer. Be aware of your body language; sit up straight and look confident.
5. Be positive and truthful- A positive body language can help you feel calm and relaxed during interview. Also, interviewers prefer honesty, so stay focused and truthful while explaining about your major strengths and how your education and experience qualifies you for the position.
6. Don’t be too familiar- This is a professional meeting so, telling the interviewer more than he needs to know could be a big mistake. Bring energy and enthusiasm to the interview, but do not overstep your place as a candidate.
7. Be concise- Keep your responses concise as interviewers are usually busy and only have a limited time for each interview. Stay focused by practising your responses in advance.
8. Don’t bash your previous boss- If you’re asked why you are leaving your current job, say something positive. Making bad comments about previous superiors, colleagues or boss should be avoided. It’s bad form to complain about your previous job.
9. Don’t talk about money- If you’re applying for a job, it’s time to focus on your skills, it’s not the time to ask about the possibility of a raise or about benefits. Express that you’ll be fine with what is being offered in the legal limit.
10. Send thank-you notes- Write a thank you note after every interview and send them by email. Hand written notes might be a better option if you’re thanking a personal contact for helping you in your job search. Thank-you notes should be sent within 24 hours of the interview.
Follow these tips and prepare yourself as a candidate an interviewer has ever seen. Whether you’re doing a virtual or in- person interview, a little preparation beforehand can make you stand out from the other candidates. Good Luck!
