Understand Comparison Before You Regret

livingonthecheap.com

Comparing ourselves with others is something that our brain does naturally, which means it can be something that is rather tedious to overcome. Instead of comparing yourself to others, try and compare yourself to your past self.I’ve lived most of my life comparing myself to others and I am sure I am not alone in my experience. Many readers out there can relate to me. Do we really understand comparison?Let’s take a look at it’s shortcomings:

  1. Comparisons deprive us of joy. They add no value, meaning, or fulfillment to our lives. They only distract from it.
  2. It doesn’t actually help us accomplish our goals. Being hard on ourselves zaps motivation and decreases goal completion.
  3. Comparisons turn friends into rivals. To some extent, comparing ourselves with friends turn out to be positive but not always.
  4. Comparison kills creativity. We are born with certain abilities and creativity but we are unaware of them.
  5. Comparing breeds feelings of low self-esteem and depression. When comparing leads you to devalue yourself or others you’ve entered dangerous territory.
  6. Comparison is a losing battle. If comparing is how you evaluate your worth, you will always be losing.

With so many negative effects inherent in comparison, it is a shame we ever take part in it. We need to break this habit as soon as possible. But how?

Here are some useful tips:

  • Be aware of its harmful effects and remove it from the inside out to free yourself from the damage.
  • See your own successes and find motivation in them to pursue more.• We should learn to appreciate and compliment the achievement of others.
  • Gratitude works like magic. It forces us to recognise the good things we already have.• Nobody is perfect in this world. We need to just chill and focus on our positive traits.
  • Try writing down three things you really like about yourself. This practice will make you more confident.
  • Take a break from social media. Spend that time and energy focusing on how much you truly have.

Now that you have knowledge about shortcomings of comparison and tips to overcome it you’ll never regret in your life. Stop comparing and start living.
